She’s a legend. She’s an icon. She’s invested more than four decades in the music industry, her return’s been 10 Grammys among numerous other awards, and a reputation as one the very best singers to ever live. Chaka’s voice and success have each been a blessing.
Grander: To say you’ve been an entertainer for more than 40 years is a fantastic accomplishment. At this stage in your career, how important is your faith in God to who you are what you’ve done?
Chaka Khan: The creator is the reason! The work I do for humanity, on any level, I do because that’s my job! That is why I’m here. That’s part of my calling…as it is for everyone, to assist one another.
Grander: People put a lot of faith in entertainers. They seem to believe in reality television more than heaven. Is this because they’re losing faith in having faith?
Chaka Khan: Absolutely! And I don’t know what is causing it. I think it may have something to do with being so disconnected from what is natural these days. In this time of man, we’re so plugged into the world wide spider web, to the electronics of it all, we’re skipping over and missing the natural beauty. That’s where the loss really is. I think that’s part of the reason for young people today losing faith in faith. And faith… that’s a necessary thing.
Grander: The way people act online is sometimes like a reality TV show. They don’t care what they say to one another or about anyone. Is this because they don’t respect the power of words?
Chaka Khan: Abso-freaking-fracking-lutely! Words are powerful! And their delivery makes it so. In the spoken word, when you speak something, you make it so, AND you also make its opposite so! You bring those things into existence. A lot of people don’t realize how much power words have.
Grander: Does there need to be more education with a stronger emphasis on what words truly can and do mean in multiple contexts?
Chaka Khan: Yes, education helps. If you learn how to read, you should be okay because you can pick how you educate yourself and become some wordsmith to at least understand words and their power. That helps too.
Grander: Some people tend to think entertainment, especially the music industry, is now more concerned with looks than talent. Why do singers seem to care more about their appearance?
Chaka Khan: I don’t know. People are coo-coo, man. They feel what they want to feel. Some of these people have missed their calling altogether. They should have been models or senators, or something like that. Some people are not in it for the right reasons.
Grander: Fame attracts people to making music now more so than artistry.
Chaka Khan: Based on my observation, with music, it’s an audio thing. That should be the #1 concern! That should be their first concern; if you’re singing on key, doing what you’re doing in the right way, reaching people’s hearts and spirits, that’s what it’s all about!
