Black Music Month: Some of my favorite R&B Joints…Part 1

For me, every day is Black Music Month. While June is the official time set aside to celebrate the incredible contributions of Black artists to music, my appreciation for R&B, soul, funk, and old-school classics doesn’t end when the calendar flips to July.

This is just a short—and I do mean short—list of some of my favorite old-school jams. Every one of these songs carries a memory. They remind me of family gatherings, neighborhood cookouts, summer nights, cruising through Muskegon, Michigan, and growing up surrounded by music that became the soundtrack of my life.

The beautiful thing about R&B is that every song tells a story. Sometimes it’s about love. Sometimes it’s about heartbreak, hope, or simply making you want to dance. The memories attached to these records are real, and they’ve only deepened my love for the music over the years.

Truth be told, there is so much incredible music in the world that it almost feels like every song is my favorite. Narrowing the list down isn’t easy. These selections simply reflect some of the records that were constantly playing while I was growing up as a young man in Muskegon, Michigan.

So, turn the volume up, reminisce, and celebrate the songs that shaped a generation. Because Black music isn’t just something we listen to—it’s history, culture, joy, resilience, and the soundtrack to our lives.
