The 1983 Muskegon Heights High School graduate is running as a write-in candidate, focusing on student achievement, transparency, and a new direction for the district.

For Joe Rone, the future of Muskegon Heights schools is personal. A proud graduate of Muskegon Heights High School, Class of 1983, Rone says the community helped shape who he is, and he believes today’s students deserve the same opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed.

Now, he wants to help shape that future as a write-in candidate for the Muskegon Heights Board of Education.

The election presents an unusual opportunity for residents. All five board seats are open, and no candidates initially filed for the positions. As a result, the seats will be filled through write-in voting, giving voters the opportunity to choose who they want representing their community.

Rone’s decision to run followed several months of attending board meetings, reviewing public records, asking questions, and examining the challenges facing the district.

“This isn’t about holding a position. It’s about accepting responsibility,” he said.

Experience Beyond the Classroom

Rone brings more than a decade of experience in IT infrastructure, project management, organizational leadership, and strategic planning. His professional background includes managing major technology initiatives, coordinating teams, overseeing vendors, and improving organizational performance.

He is also a community advocate and local developer who believes Muskegon Heights has tremendous potential. His interests in education, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization reflect his belief that stronger schools and stronger communities go hand in hand.

Three Priorities for the District

If elected, Rone says his first priorities would be transparency and financial oversight, improved student achievement, and establishing a long-term vision for Muskegon Heights schools.

He wants a closer examination of governance responsibilities, financial obligations, and management agreements, particularly the relationship between the elected Muskegon Heights Board of Education and the appointed Academy System board.

He also wants greater attention given to literacy, mathematics, attendance, teacher retention, classroom stability, and ensuring students receiving special education services have the resources they need.

Looking further ahead, Rone supports exploring a more unified, locally accountable educational system while protecting instructional continuity. He also sees opportunities to expand career readiness, STEM education, technology, and partnerships that prepare students for life after graduation.

Drawing on his project-management experience, Rone believes meaningful improvement requires clear goals, measurable results, and follow-through.

Rebuilding Community Confidence

For Rone, restoring public trust begins with openness and communication. He advocates for accessible board documents, understandable financial reports, regular community updates, and meaningful opportunities for parents, teachers, students, and residents to participate.

He says his own efforts to understand the district have included attending public meetings and submitting Freedom of Information Act requests.

“Show the documents, explain the decisions, and demonstrate the results,” he said.

Rone describes himself as an independent voice willing to question established practices and explore solutions that put students first.

“I’m not interested in protecting the way things have always been done. I’m interested in identifying what works, correcting what doesn’t, and creating opportunities for our children,” he said.

For Rone, this campaign is about more than serving on a school board. It’s about giving back to the community that helped shape his life and making sure the next generation has opportunities to succeed.

His message is straightforward: Muskegon Heights deserves strong schools, responsible leadership, economic opportunity, and a future its residents can believe in.
