There are plenty of conversations about today’s young people. Not nearly enough conversations with them.
That distinction sits at the heart of the Mosaic Promise Youth and Family Empowerment Series, an initiative from Mosaic Masterminds in partnership with 15 Pearls and a Promise, designed to create a space where young people and their families can talk, listen, learn and feel supported.
But this story is also part of something larger happening in Grand Rapids—a growing recognition that strengthening a community means investing directly in the people and families who make up that community.
During a conversation with Grander, Dr. April Ruiz explained that the Grand Rapids Community Foundation plays an important role in that larger picture, investing in efforts designed to help the community thrive while advancing equitable access to diverse resources. The Foundation entrusts community nonprofits and organizations to help carry that mission into neighborhoods and families.
For Ruiz, the Mosaic Promise series represents that philosophy in action.
The work begins with understanding what young people may be experiencing beneath the surface, because sometimes the biggest struggles aren’t the ones adults can immediately see.
One of the most powerful observations Ruiz shared is that many young people feel invisible. They can feel as though they always have to be okay, always have to perform, always have to fit in and always have to avoid making mistakes. At the same time, they’re navigating friendships, school, family expectations, social media and a world that can seem to demand that they grow up faster than ever.
And when something is wrong, they don’t always know how to say it.
Sometimes, they show it through their behavior instead.
That’s where Ruiz believes adults have work to do.
Instead of immediately judging a young person’s behavior, adults have to become better at recognizing the signs behind it. What looks like attitude might be frustration. What looks like withdrawal might be hurt. What looks like defiance might be a young person struggling to communicate.
The question isn’t simply, What’s wrong with this kid?
The better question may be, What’s happening with this young person?
That shift in perspective can change everything.
The familiar saying that it takes a village to raise a child has never really gone away. But the village itself has changed.
Today’s young people are growing up in a world of nonstop digital communication, social media influence, peer pressure, competing expectations and information coming at them from every direction. Parents are navigating that world, too.
Mosaic Promise recognizes that supporting young people means supporting the people raising them. That’s why the series isn’t simply about putting young people in a room and telling them how to make better choices. It is about creating a space where the entire family can participate.
The series is designed for middle school and high school students and their families, with breakout sessions providing opportunities for young men, young women and parents to have conversations in environments where they can speak more openly.
That structure is intentional.
Young people need spaces where they can talk with people who understand their experiences. Parents need spaces where they can discuss the realities of raising children in today’s environment. And families need opportunities to come back together with new perspectives and tools they can use long after the session ends.
The goal isn’t another lecture.
It’s conversation.
And conversation can create connection.
The Mosaic Promise series also understands that empowerment isn’t simply about inspiration. Families need tools. They need resources. They need support that can translate into everyday life.
Through the series, families will have opportunities to develop skills and strategies for navigating challenges, strengthening relationships and helping young people develop the tools they need as they move through different stages of life.
Just as importantly, the program is being designed with accessibility in mind. Transportation will be provided, and a meal will be available for the entire family at the conclusion of the evening.
Those details matter.
Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn’t whether a family wants help. It’s whether they can realistically get there.
The partnership between Mosaic Masterminds and 15 Pearls and a Promise reflects the kind of community collaboration that can turn an idea into an opportunity. Combined with the broader community-investment mission represented by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, the effort demonstrates what can happen when organizations come together around a shared commitment to young people and families.
The investment isn’t simply in an event.

Ruiz isn’t looking at the Mosaic Promise series as something that has to end when the final session concludes. Ideally, she would like to see the opportunity continue and grow through future partnerships.
That’s important because community change rarely happens overnight.
A single conversation can plant a seed. A series of conversations can build trust. Trust can lead to relationships. Relationships can create support systems. And support systems can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.
Perhaps the most important message running through Ruiz’s vision is that young people shouldn’t have to be perfect before adults decide they’re worth listening to.
They shouldn’t have to have all the answers.
They shouldn’t have to hide their struggles.
And parents shouldn’t be expected to have all the answers either.
Families need spaces where they can learn together. They need people willing to listen without immediately judging. They need communities willing to show up.
That’s what the Mosaic Promise Youth and Family Empowerment Series is attempting to create.
