Acclaimed jazz pianist and composer Brian Simpson has returned to the spotlight with Midnight Groove, a soulful and sophisticated new album that underscores his mastery of melody and mood. Released in March 2025 on Shanachie Entertainment, the project blends Simpson’s signature smooth jazz sensibility with fresh collaborations and global influences, solidifying his status as one of contemporary jazz’s most consistent voices.

Simpson, long celebrated for his refined touch and emotive compositions, stretches his sound on Midnight Groove while staying rooted in the elegant, groove-laden style that has won him fans around the world. The album opens with “Blue Mystic,” a buoyant, rhythm-driven piece that serves as an energetic introduction to a set rich in nuance and texture.

One of the album’s standout tracks, “Under The Stars,” features rising tenor saxophonist Isaiah Collier. Their interplay offers a striking balance of spontaneity and polish, hinting at a younger generation’s growing impact on the genre. Another highlight is the title track “Midnight Groove,” a moody and magnetic number featuring trumpet virtuoso Keyon Harrold. The two met while performing at the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta and decided to capture that synergy in the studio. The result is a late-night anthem that feels both intimate and cinematic.

“This album is about capturing moments—some of them imagined, some very real,” says Simpson. “I wanted to stretch a bit with the collaborators and the rhythms, but always with a focus on strong, memorable melodies.”

Midnight Groove also leans into global influences. “Tropical Escape” evokes sun-drenched coastal scenes with its Latin-infused rhythms, while “In Search of My Dream”—featuring Spanish guitarist Antonio Gomez—offers a reflective interlude that speaks to the universal language of music. Elsewhere, flutist Jeff Kashiwa joins Simpson on “Lost in the Moment,” a standout track that mixes nostalgic vibes with forward-thinking production.

Simpson’s career spans over three decades, during which he’s served as musical director for Dave Koz and released a steady stream of critically praised solo projects. With Midnight Groove, he not only adds another chapter to that legacy but also shows a willingness to evolve without losing his signature sound.

“I’ve always focused on delivering quality music that connects with people,” he says. “This album is a thank-you to the fans who’ve stayed with me—and an invitation to anyone new to come along for the ride.”

Midnight Groove is available now on all major streaming platforms and in stores. Brian Simpson will kick off a supporting tour this summer with dates across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
