GRAND RAPIDS, MI (December 2, 2020) – The Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation (GRPLF) has received a $20,000 grant from the Wege Foundation of Grand Rapids. Funds will support the Grand Rapids Public Library system’s broad and ongoing diversity programming and services in 2021.
The Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation partners with the Grand Rapids Public Library to support and fund programs and services that enrich the community and offer an experience that would not otherwise be possible.
In addition to supporting GRPL’s Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage programming, the Wege Foundation grant funds the One Book, One City for Kids program that provides books to 1,800 GRPS 5th graders.
The grant will also fund GRPL’s new mobile hotspot lending program. This program aims to close the digital equity gap for families in Grand Rapids who cannot afford internet access. The grant will allow for additional mobile hotspots to be purchased, providing families in the city with much needed internet access. The hotspots are distributed through community partner organizations, ensuring that they reach the most vulnerable populations.
The $20,000 Wege Foundation grant will support, maintain, and expand GRPL’s programming which is funded by grants from the GRPLF. These funds are raised through individual donations, grants, and fundraising events.
GRPLF Board Chair Dan Poortenga commented, “This programming improves the quality of life for many people in the city and we are grateful for the support of the Wege Foundation.”
The Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation was formed in 1990 and serves as the fundraising and advocacy arm of the Grand Rapids Public Library. Its mission is to raise funds for library programs and services, and to build an endowment to fund, initiate and lead programs that benefit the West Michigan community that cannot be funded through the library’s general operating budget.
