From boardrooms to block parties, Kareem Scales is building a new model of leadership — one where equity, ethics, and AI collide to shape the future of work.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — When Kareem Scales steps into a room, you feel it. There’s something magnetic about the way he carries himself — calm yet charged, thoughtful yet direct. He’s the kind of leader who doesn’t just talk about transformation; he engineers it.

As the founder and CEO of Scales Consulting, LLC, Scales has carved out a powerful niche in leadership development and organizational strategy. But this isn’t your average consulting gig. His firm, launched in 2021 and operating full-time since 2023, blends leadership coaching, equity integration, and AI innovation into one mission: helping people, processes, and purpose work together in harmony.

“If I’m going to invest my time and energy into something,” Scales says, “I want it to be in shaping my own legacy — and helping others shape theirs.”

The Origin of Scales Consulting

Before Scales became a sought-after strategist, he was a fixture in multiple worlds — corporate, tech, and nonprofit. From the insurance industry to executive leadership at the Grand Rapids NAACP, he’s collected what he calls “a gumbo of experience.”

“I’ve had the chance to see both sides — corporate and community,” he says. “That gave me the balance I needed to help organizations grow without losing their soul.”

That balance became the foundation of Scales Consulting, LLC, which now works with clients across sectors — from city governments and healthcare agencies to statewide nonprofits and businesses hungry for better leadership.

The AI Revolution Meets Human Leadership

In an era when artificial intelligence seems to dominate every boardroom conversation, Scales saw something missing: understanding.

His firm launched The Scale Up InitiativeStrategic Coaching for AI Leadership Excellence — a groundbreaking program designed to help professionals learn how to integrate AI tools responsibly and effectively.

“AI isn’t going anywhere,” Scales says, his tone shifting to conviction. “The question isn’t whether to use it — it’s how to use it responsibly, equitably, and efficiently.”

During Tech Week Grand Rapids, Scales Consulting debuted the People’s Prompt Lab, a hands-on workshop that walked over 100 participants through real-world AI applications. The energy was electric — community members, business leaders, and technologists experimenting together, learning how to prompt and apply AI to real scenarios.

“AI isn’t the enemy — ignorance is,” Scales says. “We want people to understand how to use it to empower, not exclude.”

Mastering the Matrix: The Summit That Changed the Conversation

In October, Scales Consulting hosted something unprecedented: The Mastering the Matrix: AI Innovation and Public Safety Summit, the first of its kind in Grand Rapids.

Held at the GVSU Eberhard Center, the summit drew more than 120 leaders from across industries — law enforcement, healthcare, education, and tech — for a full day of conversation around how AI can serve all people, not just a privileged few.

Keynote speaker Renee Cummings, a University of Virginia professor and international expert on AI ethics, delivered a powerful message about justice and innovation.

Supported by partners including Consumers Energy, Gentex, C-Context, ALPAC, and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, the event solidified Scales Consulting’s reputation as a bridge between tech and humanity.

“The systems we build reflect the people who design them,” Scales says. “And too often, those systems don’t reflect people who look like us. That’s why we’re here — to change that.”

Coaching Leaders, One Conversation at a Time

For all the corporate clients and government contracts, Scales hasn’t forgotten the power of personal growth. Through individualized coaching, he helps entrepreneurs, executives, and emerging leaders refine their vision and voice.

“I didn’t always have mentors coming up,” he admits. “So I’m intentional about being that for others. Leadership isn’t about titles — it’s about mindset.”

Scales Consulting also partners with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to train child welfare professionals on anti-racism, cultural competency, and bias awareness — ensuring that leadership development reaches every level of public service.

The Future Looks Scaled Up

As a certified AI Growth Strategist, Scales is already looking ahead. He points to a Boston Consulting Group study showing that companies using AI effectively see productivity rise by 40%.

“Just imagine what you could do with 40% more of your time,” he says with a grin. “That’s not science fiction — that’s strategy.”

But for Scales, success isn’t measured in percentages or profit margins. It’s measured in progress — in how people grow, how communities evolve, and how organizations find their humanity again.

“Our work is about transformation — not just within systems, but within people,” Scales says. “If we can help leaders think differently, serve better, and lead with purpose, then we’re doing what we were meant to do.”

PULL QUOTES

“If your people aren’t aligned with your purpose, all the process in the world won’t save you.”

“AI came faster than anyone expected — and we’re helping folks catch up with confidence.”

“Leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about how you show up when no one’s watching.”
