There’s a different kind of energy in the city right now — the kind that feels like progress.
During a recent broadcast, local media personality Jane Jones, affectionately known as “Miss Crazy Sexy Cool,” shared news that stopped listeners in their tracks. Grand Rapids Public Schools has reached a historic milestone.
The Class of 2025 achieved an 82.39% graduation rate, with 756 students walking across the stage — marking nearly a 10% increase from the previous year and the largest graduating class the district has celebrated in more than a decade.
For Grand Rapids, this isn’t just a statistic. It’s a statement.
An 82.39% graduation rate represents more than diplomas. It reflects perseverance, late nights, second chances, mentorship, and a community determined to see its young people succeed. It signals that more students are finishing strong, stepping confidently into adulthood, and redefining what is possible for themselves and their families.
“This is what leveling up looks like,” Jones expressed during her segment. “More young people finishing strong, stepping into their purpose, and changing the narrative.”
Behind every graduate stands a network of educators and mentors who made the journey possible. Jones made it a point to recognize those working tirelessly behind the scenes, including Giants Award winner Kenyatta Hill-Hall, along with dedicated educators Maria Jackson-Hampton, Jessalynn Johnson, Patrice Pierre, and countless others who show up every day for Grand Rapids students.
These teachers and staff members are not simply fulfilling job descriptions — they are shaping futures, building confidence, and creating environments where students can thrive.
Educational milestones of this magnitude do not happen by accident. They are the result of strategic leadership, committed families, engaged communities, and students who refuse to give up. When districts see increases of this size, it often reflects expanded support systems, stronger engagement initiatives, and an unwavering belief that every student can cross that stage.
For a city often focused on economic growth and development, this achievement reminds us that the true foundation of progress is education.
When communities invest in their young people, the return is immeasurable.
The Class of 2024 has set a new benchmark for what is possible in Grand Rapids. And if this momentum continues, the future looks even brighter.
Because when community shows up and shows out — this is what happens.
